The regular monthly Board of Education meeting was held Monday, April 8, 2024 in the Board Meeting Room in the Elementary Building. Administrators present were Superintendent Bland and Secondary Principal Burton. ROUTINE AGENDA President Anderson called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. and noted the Nebraska Open Meetings Law. Notice of this meeting was properly posted and/or published by advance Public Notice in accordance with Board Policy #2008 with notice and advance agenda given to the President of the Board and all members prior to the meeting date. EXCUSED ABSENCES Diane Pelan-Johnson moved that Brett Johnson and Henry Unwin are absent, excused. Magnusson seconded the motion. There was no discussion. Voting results were: For Motion-7; Against Motion-0. Motion carried. ROLL CALL Roll Call was called with the following members present: Groth, Dane Johnson, Diane Pelan-Johnson, Kiley Johnson, Magnusson, Ray and Anderson. REGULAR AGENDA President Anderson welcomed 6 visitors. One visitor addressed the Board. CONSENT AGENDA Ray moved that the consent agenda be approved as presented. Kiley Johnson seconded the motion. There was no discussion. Voting results were: For Motion-7; Against Motion-0. Motion carried. Items included in the consent agenda were the approval of the April 8, 2024 meeting agenda; approval of claims from the General Fund in the amount of $41,681.46, Depreciation Fund in the amount of $7,400.40 and Lunch Fund in the amount of $20,989.20 and the approval of the minutes from the March 11, 2024 regular school board meeting. TREASURER’S REPORT Mrs. Bland reviewed the information on the treasurer’s report. LEGISLATIVE UPDATE FROM NRCSA DIRECTOR MR. JACK MOLES Nebraska Rural Community Schools Association (NRCSA) director, Jack Moles, reported on the education related legislation being discussed during the 2024 session of the Nebraska Legislature. ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS Mrs. Bland gave the Elementary Principal’s Report in Mrs. Charling’s absence. NSCAS testing will begin this week. Mrs. Bland reported that summer school will take place June 3rd – 7th and June 10th – 14th. The preschool advisory council met this spring to discuss our preschool program and ideas for improvement. Mrs. Bland reported that we have been awarded the Beyond School Bells Leverage Grant for up to $50,000 to fund our After School Program for the 2024-2025 school year. Current PK-6th grade enrollment is 223 students, which is the same as last month and up 5 from last year. Secondary Principal Burton reported current enrollment for the 7th through 12th grades at 178 students which is down 2 from last month and down 11 from last year. Mrs. Burton reported that ACT and Pre-ACT testing has been completed. NSCAS testing will be completed soon. There will be a modified high school schedule on May 2nd due to hosting a track meet. Our 2024 Close Up trip was a great success in which our students were able to learn more about our nation’s history and establish a further understanding of liberty and equality. A list of upcoming events and activities was presented. Superintendent Bland reviewed the list of proposed summer projects. If all are completed, the cost will be approximately $84,000. Mrs. Bland reviewed the facility update flier and thanked President Anderson for the update video. Mrs. Bland reviewed the John Deere Tractor Lease/Rental Proposal. We are still waiting to hear from NDE if we have received the Safety Grant we applied for. Mrs. Bland reported that she has spoken with three interested parties about the daycare provider opportunity. Due to the athletic banquet being held on May 13th, we will be moving the monthly Board meeting to Tuesday, May 14th at 8:00 p.m. Superintendent Bland ended her report by reporting her remaining vacation and sick leave. APPROVAL OF OUT OF STATE TRAVEL REQUEST Magnusson moved to approve the out of state travel request submitted by Sarah Gramke to visit Washington DC for the 2024-2025 Close-Up trip. Ray seconded the motion. There was no discussion. Voting results were: For Motion-7; Against Motion-0. Motion carried. STAFF RESIGNATIONS Ray moved to accept the resignations, with regret, of Korri Veskerna. Kiley Johnson seconded the motion. President Anderson thanked her for her years of service to Oakland-Craig.
