City of Lyons Natural Gas Safety / Digging Safety November 21, 2024 This article is aimed at educating gas customers, the public, Government organizations, persons engaged in excavation and contractors who engage in excavation to recognize a gas pipeline or leak emergency for the purpose of reporting these situations to the proper operator (City of Lyons) or public officials. The City of Lyons has a 24 hr. Gas Emergency Number through the Burt County Sheriffs Dispatch Center. The number is 402-374-2900. Dispatch personnel are trained to help people through these situations and dispatch the proper gas personnel to assist you. This number is also posted throughout town in the vicinity of Gas Pipelines. These signs consist of a yellow caution sign identifying the City of Lyons Gas Pipeline and the 24 hr. Emergency telephone number. Customers can also call the City of Lyons direct during work hours (402-687-2485). If you do smell or hear Natural Gas blowing, please follow this advice. : Do not use your telephone : Use a neighbors or a friend’s telephone : Do not turn any electrical switches on or off : Do not ring the doorbell : Do not start any engines or create any sparks : Especially no smoking : Evacuate the building if you do not feel safe : Keep a safe distance away Please be aware of anything out of the ordinary or of any Gas smell. Take notice of the problem and give the City a call. The City adds an “odor” to Natural gas to help you smell any leaks. Even a leak the size of a pinhole will emit this “odor”, which is comparable to a rotten egg smell. If you plan to do any digging on your property or anywhere else, including driving posts. Please call the Diggers Hotline of Nebraska at 811or 1-800-331-5666. Diggers Hotline includes locating gas, electric, water, sewer, cable tv and telephone lines. It is a Nebraska State law the Diggers Hotline be contacted 2 business days before digging. Calling Diggers Hotline not only helps you dig safely, but also helps you avoid fines and additional repair charges, not to mention your life. If you are planning to do your own digging it is your responsibility to call diggers hot line, but if a contractor is doing the digging for you, it is the contractor’s responsibility to call.
